Misconceptions

I blogged about putting my sons in a catholic school earlier today (http://nocturn.vsbnet.be/content/defeated).

They funny thing is that I received a response:

"So, to solve your issue with how racism was handled at your previous school, you go to a fairly monolithic catholic school. Certainly theologically monolithic, and I'm guessing largely racially monolithic as well. That move sounds racist to me... eliminate all other diversities around your child."

Defeated

Yesterday, I made a very mixed decision of enrolling my two sons in a katholic school.  I hope this will be a good school for them and I really think it will be.

But today, I can't shake this feeling of defeat.  It's his 4th school and he's only 5, we always kept the catholic schools from the list of options because I strongly feel that religion in schools violates our freedom of religion.  But too many things went wrong in these public schools and there were several racist incidents which weren't dealt with in any meaningful way.

Flash problems on 64-bit Linux

I noticed that some sites that use flash are not working on my fresh Karmic install anymore, after some checking I realized that this is my first 64-bit desktop install.

And sure enough, I have a spare machine running i386 Ubuntu and those sites work fine...

It's not that Flash on amd64 does nothing, it seems to work ok for most site like youtube, but it fails on some others, including the Teletubbies games my son likes to play...

I'm not inclined to go back to 32-bit, so if anyone has a solution, please let me know (still looking myself).

Upgrading to Drupal 6

My site is finally moving to D6, the project module was holding me back at D5, so expect some fallout...

A new day, a new job

Today is my first day on my new job.  I'm now a senior consultant for OpenFuture (www.open-future.be) and I'm looking forward to this new challenge!I'm quite happy that I can do something to help spread Free/Open Source software in Belgium as a day job :-)

Karmic reverting to Pidgin?

I noticed that today's karmic update pulled in pidgin again, anyone know if this means that the empathy switch is being reverted before beta1?

I kinda hope not because Empathy really is getting pretty good...

Yay, New Artwork is hitting Karmic

This week finally say the first iteration of the long awaited new artwork for Karmic and it looks a lot better than previous versions did, though I still hope that more improvements will be made.

First thing you will notice is that it has a new color palette and a new icon theme (humanity), the latter also looks quite good on Dust (my favorite Ubuntu theme).
